How to Get In

Overview

Changes to the entrance requirements of a program must be reviewed and approved by the L&S Curriculum Committee. All undergraduate majors must organize declaration language into a standard table. There are two options for L&S programs:

  • If there are no declaration requirements outside of contacting an advisor or department representative, the College will insert the L&S standard table.
  • If there are declaration requirements that fall into one of the categories defined by campus, then the program will use a custom table built in collaboration with the College. Descriptions of each category and the text requirements are here.

L&S Standard Table

The language options for each field are predefined by campus. Language should be simple and to the point.

Major Declaration: Contacting the Department/Unit

Information on contacting the advisor, filling out a declaration form, or other processes is now on the Guide Advising and Careers section, not the How to Get In section. Please see the recommendations on the Advising and Careers section.

Certificate Declaration

Certificate programs currently do not use the campus table. Programs may choose to use the L&S standard table if they have no declaration requirements.

Use factual, accessible language to describe the process for declaring a certificate. For example:

  • Students must meet with the advisor to declare the certificate.
  • Students are eligible to declare the certificate at any point in their studies. They should declare it as early as possible to plan the required coursework. Contact the undergraduate advisor to declare the certificate.

Prohibited Combinations

Background

A prohibited combination is any limitation on an undergraduate student’s simultaneous declaration in two plans (majors, certificates, degree programs) or sub-plans (named options of a major) within or outside of L&S. A few key points about prohibited combinations:

  • Departments/units must track prohibited combinations manually. Campus systems do not automatically prevent students from declaring prohibited combinations of programs.
  • All new prohibited combinations must be mutually agreed upon. Communication with the other unit is critical.
  • In addition, the other unit/department should be listed in the Lumen proposal as a vested interest department.
  • All prohibited combinations must be on the How to Get In Guide pages.
  • All new prohibited combinations are reviewed by the L&S Curriculum Committee.

Standard Language

Programs will use L&S standard language to indicate a prohibited combination with another program. Use the names of the programs as they appear in Guide.

Example:

Students declared in [Program X] cannot also declare [Program Y].
