L&S shares four majors with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS):
- Biochemistry (103)
- Biology (112)
- Environmental Sciences (414)
- Microbiology (677) – The L&S part of this program will be discontinued as of Fall 2027.
CALS versions of these majors are open only to CALS students. L&S versions of these majors are open to L&S students as an undergraduate degree program, and to all non-L&S students as an Additional Major.
L&S and CALS work together to align the officially governed content of these shared programs. That said, there are differences between shared majors that are due to differences in the missions and policies of the home colleges.
Although the core major requirements match between CALS and L&S, there are differences in degree-level requirements based on the College, declaration processes, residence & quality of work, and honors. As a result, the four-year plans for the L&S and CALS degrees look different. L&S students in the shared majors follow L&S-specific degree requirements.
For questions on these individual programs, please contact the advising team, linked above. For questions on CALS-specific degree requirements and majors, please contact David Wright-Racette.
L&S and CALS have different academic policies for majors shared between the Colleges, and these differences may be reflected in different approaches to Guide content. As these differences illustrate, L&S may ask departments to delineate governed content from nongoverned content on separate pages in Guide, whereas CALS may have other recommended approaches. Questions related to these differences should be communicated to Kim Grocholski and Wyl Schuth
